| George Green, known locally as “Junk Man George,” was born on March 12, 1894, in McClendville, South Carolina to the late Isaac and Caroline Green. He had a brother, Harry Green. George came to Florida in 1938. He worked for the late I. A. Krusen Land and Timber Company, and also did grove work. He met and married Daisy Haines. No children were born to this union. He marched in the hometown parades with his horse and buggy and could always be identified with his spectacular white horse, Peggy. He also worked for Clarence Lane in plowing his field in exchange for the watermelon crop. Mr. Green loved to fish and hunt but his family was always his first priority. He worked diligently both night and day in gathering junk items to sell in order to provide for his family. Friends recalled that he had a wonderful personality and was an informal leader and role model in his community. He participated in the annual Zephyrhills Founder's Day celebration. Mr. Green died on January 8, 1977. [Information and photos provided by Grace Seymore, Madonna Wise, and Irene Dobson.] |
