The following was transcribed by Jeff Cannon from Hernando County School Board minutes from Sept. 29 and Oct. 2, 1882.

The board of Public Instruction met pursuant to adjournment Sept. 29th 1882- and held over the 30th leaving the Supt. to hold over and examine the Annual report of J.J. Hale Treasurer of Sch Board.
Oct. 2nd -1882-
Present Jacob Clements Chairman J.S. Colding- James E. Burnside, George Geiger and D.H. Thrasher— Supt and Secty
First business of the board was the report of the Superintendent—
To wit— Gentlemen of the Board
As the scholastic year of 1881 and 1882 now closes- it give me the great satisfaction to inform you that our teachers as well as patrons, that is 9/10 of them express themselves satisfied and happy with the course proceeded by the board and Supt. towards them— In granting all we could, with promptness under the Law.
Further that out of forty three (43) established schools that (38) of them were taught and most of them for the full (3) three months term— All having received pay according to the action of the board and the Law.
It gives me further pleasure to state that the schools that were not taught was on account of their not be applied for. I long to see the time when our Public Schools may be taught for a term of (6) six months in Lieu of (3) three as it now is. Owing to the prayers of Taxation would urge upon you to use all of your influence to get the people to aid in the important matter of educating their children by paying the teacher for (1) one or (2) two months attached to the (3) three granted by us.
In conclusion it certainly gives me great pleasure to inform you that after the 38 schools being paid and our board owing nothing to any one that we have a balance in hand of $852.57 to commence with as shown by Treasurer's report.

Oak Pond was established by uniting Sea Island and Spivey School— On motion Saxon School Colored was abolished, the Board believing that one Colored School was sufficient for Brooksville and in just defense of the taxpayers of Hernando Co that Brooksville Col. No. 12 should answer every legitimate purpose—
Crystal River Col School the Board declares discontinuing.
Therefore leaving (41) Forty One public schools established at this date for the scholastic year commencing Oct. 1st 1882 and ending September 30th 1883—
The Supt. reports that teachers have been even at this date secured for about 15 of the schools.
The Board having no further business adjourns over until Monday Oct. 27, 1882 to receive the Report of J.J. Hale Treasurer of the School Board H.C.
