Taken in 1961, this photo depicts the construction of a Pasco County Government building at 5418 Sunset Road still in use by the County.
To the left is the Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, erected in 1955 and still standing. The "triangle" within which the Government building sits
is composed of River Road to the southeast, Veterans Drive to the west, and Sunset Drive to the north. The home of Henry I. Steel
can be seen in the lower right. The property is currently owned by the Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Veterans Drive was created from the property purchased by the County, and connected River Road to Sunset Road. Legions Loop, which can be seen on the right of the photo, commenced at River Road and looped around to US 19. Along the East side of US 19 (upper right corner), appearing as vacant land, between Legions Loop and Green Key Road, would become Davis Center, which was constructed sometime in 1969. A portion of the Davis property, fronting River Road at the intersection of Veterans Loop, is the location of Genesis School. The River Bend Mobile Home Park on Green Key Road can be clearly seen. The oldest building on that location was built in 1945. Main Street at U. S. 19 (top right corner) is visible, as well as the real estate firm of Frank I. Grey on the northeast corner. The current structure was erected in 1954. Mr. Grey and Henry "Hank" Dingus owned a joint real estate venture and were very active in the growth of our area. The bridge on Main Street can be seen as it crosses over the Cotee River towards downtown, in the upper left of the photo. [Caption by David A. Henry] |
