Alfred Hudson, 1945. Photo courtesy of Michelle McLaughlin, who writes, “ Note that the upstairs windows had no glass, just shutters. My grandmother (Hazel Hudson) remembers that the children slept upstairs. She says that her father grew pecans and raised bees for honey in addition to all the garden produce. The family income came from the sale of these items, like many other families of the day. I found it interesting that she says he did not grow oranges. She remembers trading the neighbor kids a handful of pecans for an orange from their property. Kids’ currency, I suppose.”
