Joseph and Nita Rewis Donahue. Mr. Donahue moved to Florida in 1957 and became the Port Richey Chief of Police in 1962. They divorced in 1971 and Mr. Donahue later remarried. In 1977 he was hired by newly-elected Sheriff John M. Short. Capt. Donahue resigned from the Sheriff's Office in 1981. On Apr. 19, 1983, shortly after he and eleven others were indicted on racketeering charges, Donahue was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head. His death was ruled a suicide, but many believed he had been murdered by organized crime figures whom he had been investigating. Photos courtesy of Jeff Cannon.
