| When this photograph was taken, c. 1889, “downtown” Tarpon was a sparse cluster of buildings running from the city dock to the train depot. This view showing sand streets and wood plank sidewalks looks south down Tarpon Avenue toward Safford. On the left is C. D. Webster's Old Reliable Drug Store. The white building with the steeple tower is the universalist's chapel, the first church in the city. The city's first railroad depot appears at the far right of the picture.
